Multilingualism Week: Workshops 19th to 23rd, 2024
Multilingualism in (higher) education
This week we explore the advantages of multilingualism in (higher) education. On February 21st, we also celebrate the International Mother Language Day. Approximately 60% of EhB students have grown up in multilingual households, making it essential for us to embrace and leverage the strengths of multilingualism in our education system.
To kick off the week, we’re launching together with VUB, the Charter for Multilingualism and Linguistic Diversity.
In collaboration with AP and HOGENT, we’re also hosting a series of lectures and workshops throughout the week. These sessions will emphasize the importance of language diversity in both education and society. Each day, from approximately 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, a different college will be the host.

Workshop: Teaching a foreign language - CLIL to the rescue pour tous (mainly in Dutch) Kathleen Galle (Organization & Management) and Bram Deraedemaker (Bilingual Teacher Training in Primary Education) CLIL stands for Content and Language Integrated Learning. It is a didactic approach where you teach a non-language subject in a language other than your students' native language. This way you teach them not only the subject content, but also the language skills. This workshop will introduce you to the principles and benefits of CLIL. You will get practical examples and exercises to enrich your own lessons with CLIL. You will also get creative and try things out for yourself. |

Workshop Multilingual Mastery with AI - A New Dimension in Professional Communication (in Dutch) Öznur Karaca (Language Policy AP and HOGENT) In this workshop, we explore the use of artificial intelligence, such as ChatGPT, to support multilingualism in education and the professional world. We will discuss how AI can enhance multilingual competencies, especially in Dutch-speaking programs where home languages are seen as an asset, but with little attention to the practical application of subject-specific knowledge in different languages. |

Lecture: Multilingual Curricula (Engels + online) A Sociolinguist and Discourse Analyst, Prof. Angouri serves as the University-level Academic Director for Education & Internationalisation at the University of Warwick. Her research spans leadership, teamwork, organizational change, identity, gender, language, and sexuality studies. With a strong commitment to global citizenship, Prof. Angouri is actively involved in reshaping research-led education and fostering innovative multilingual curriculum design. |

Lecture: Multilingual Learning Trajectories + Show-and-tell: Screening tool pluriform identities (in Dutch) Prof. Jordi Casteleyn (UAntwerpen) + Lena De Mol (HOGENT) Prof. Casteleyn is an expert in Dutch Subject Didactics and multilingual education. His research focuses on effective reading instruction and supporting students with instructional language difficulties, where he plays a crucial role in bridging language education and practice. Lena De Mol is a lecturer (IT & Digital Innovation) and has developed a Reflection Tool that encourages students to explore their own cultural and linguistic identity. In doing so, she promotes a pluralistic self-concept by addressing the themes of multilingualism and intercultural competencies and by connecting these to future workplaces. |
