What does the programme look like?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is developing at a rapid pace. This emerging technology has led to a whole new generation of applications that are changing the way we work and live.

In this one-year postgraduate programme, you will explore the technology, methods and applications behind artificial intelligence in greater depth. You will learn how data is prepared, how machine learning models are developed and trained, and how AI can be applied to concrete use cases.

In the first semester, you will build a solid foundation in AI Fundamentals, Data Science and Machine Learning. In the second semester, the focus shifts towards applications, projects and technologies such as AI in IoT and Big Data.

You are expected to have a basic understanding of programming. What does this mean in practice?

The postgraduate programme is highly practice-oriented. During various workshops, you will work with Python.
The key concepts you should be familiar with include: variables, basic arithmetic functions, string manipulation, loops and conditionals. Extensive Python knowledge is required, as we use advanced standard libraries during the classes.

Is attendance compulsory for every class?

No, attendance is not compulsory. However, one of the strengths of the programme is the personal interaction with lecturers and fellow students. All classes are also streamed and recorded, so you can watch them afterwards if you are unable to attend every session live. There are also group projects, so attendance is recommended for these projects.

When do classes take place?

Classes take place every Tuesday from 1 pm to 6 pm.
All classes are recorded, so if you are unable to attend, you can watch them online at your own pace afterwards.

What language is the programme taught in?

All courses are taught entirely in English. However, most lecturers can also answer your questions in Dutch.

Practical information

  • Duration: 1 academic year

  • Location: Campus Kaai – Nijverheidskaai 170, 1070 Brussels
  • Language: English
  • Degree: bachelor’s or master’s degree required
  • Programming skills: basic knowledge required
  • Internship: optional

Courses

We provide you with the tools, techniques and insights you need to develop into a versatile AI professional. After an introductory week, the first semester focuses on the foundations of artificial intelligence, with courses in Data Science, Machine Learning and Big Data. The second semester shifts towards applications such as Natural Language Processing (NLP), Large Language Models (LLMs), computer vision and deploying AI models in an enterprise environment.

You also have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the field through an optional internship at an AI-focused company.

AI Fundamentals

During the introductory week, you will explore the different facets of artificial intelligence. How do AI systems learn? Which techniques and applications are available? And what are the pitfalls, limitations and challenges you need to take into account?

Data Science

You will explore the complete data science workflow, from collecting and processing data to modelling a problem and deploying the resulting solution for end users.

Throughout the course, we pay close attention to the limitations and potential pitfalls of AI, while ensuring that the solutions you develop are ethically responsible and secure.

Machine Learning

You will dive deeper into one of the core disciplines of AI: machine learning.

Topics include regression and classification, neural networks, deep learning, genetic algorithms and clustering. You will learn how to train models using existing libraries, while critically assessing the data and understanding the limitations of the datasets you work with.

Internship

The optional internship gives you the opportunity to apply your knowledge to real-world challenges in a professional environment.

You will spend several weeks working with a company that actively develops or applies AI, gaining hands-on experience and insight into how AI is used beyond the classroom.

IoT & Big Data

The Internet of Things (IoT) is opening up new possibilities in areas such as smart cities, Industry 4.0 and e-health. At the same time, these applications generate vast amounts of data that need to be processed and transformed into meaningful information.

In this course, you will explore techniques for efficiently processing and visualising large datasets. You will also become familiar with edge computing and its role in reducing the processing load on cloud environments.

AI Project

In this course, you will explore state-of-the-art AI technologies and put your knowledge into practice. You will then develop your own AI project, individually or as part of a team, with guidance from our AI experts.

Previous student projects include:

  • Smart Home: an AI model to optimise household electricity consumption
  • Sign language: an AI platform that teaches sign language using computer vision
  • Facial recognition: drones that follow a person based on facial recognition
  • And many more.

Machine Learning Operations (MLOps)

In both professional and academic environments, many machine learning models are developed, but relatively few make it into a production environment. One of the reasons is that ML workflows are still often managed manually.

Machine Learning Operations (MLOps) addresses this challenge by bringing development, deployment and operational processes together.

In this course, you will explore the challenges involved in MLOps, examine different workflows and work with industry-standard MLOps tools.

Internship

If you would like to apply your theoretical and practical knowledge directly in a professional setting, you can opt for an internship.

During several weeks, you will work on a concrete AI challenge within an organisation, giving you the opportunity to put your knowledge into practice in a professional environment.

In the past, our students have completed internships at organisations such as ML6, imec and Human.ai.

You are responsible for finding your own internship placement. EhB supports you in this process with an overview of organisations where students have completed internships in the past.

Would you rather focus entirely on the programme? You can also complete the postgraduate programme without an internship.

After your studies

After completing this postgraduate programme, you will have a broad and solid foundation in applied artificial intelligence.

You will understand the principles behind data science and machine learning and have hands-on experience developing and applying AI models and techniques. You will also be better equipped to critically assess both the possibilities and limitations of AI.

This combination makes the programme relevant if you want to further specialise within your current role, integrate AI into a professional context, or take the next step towards a role where AI and data are central.
